the 4 C’s of Diamonds.
The way a diamond catches the light. Its subtle color. The details within it. Cut, clarity, color, and carat give you a language for comparing stones—and finding the balance that feels right for you.
01 / Light & craftsmanship
Cut
The way a diamond comes to life.
Cut describes how a diamond’s proportions, facets, and finish work with light. It influences brightness, flashes of color, and the sparkle you see as the stone moves.
Shape is the outline, such as round, oval, or pear. Cut quality describes the craftsmanship behind that appearance.

GIA’s overall cut grade applies to standard round brilliant diamonds in the D–Z color range. For other shapes, proportions, polish, symmetry, and viewing the actual stone help you assess its appearance.
02 / The details within
Clarity
Small characteristics. A closer look.
Clarity considers inclusions inside a diamond and blemishes on its surface. Graders assess their size, number, location, and visibility under 10× magnification.
Many characteristics are too small to see without magnification. The report and a close view of the individual stone give you more context than a grade alone.

These are the 11 grades in the GIA clarity scale. A grade is based on examination at 10×; it does not by itself tell you exactly what you will notice in everyday wear.
03 / Subtle shades
Color
From colorless to a warmer hue.
For diamonds in the normal color range, color grading measures the presence of yellow or brown tint. GIA’s scale begins at D for colorless and continues to Z for light color.
Color is graded in controlled lighting by comparison with reference stones. Small differences can be difficult to judge from a photograph or screen.

This scale describes the normal color range. Fancy-color diamonds are evaluated separately.
04 / Weight & presence
Carat
Weight, with its own sense of scale.
Carat, abbreviated ct, measures a diamond’s weight. One carat equals 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points, so a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 ct.
Carat alone does not describe face-up size. Shape and proportions also affect how large a diamond appears, so compare its millimeter measurements as well as its weight.

1.00 ct = 0.20 g
Two diamonds with the same carat weight can differ in appearance and value. Consider all four C’s together. Carat is also different from karat, which describes the purity of gold.
